‘90057’

‘In this body of work, my aim is to convey the simultaneous beauty and brutality of change.’

“90057” is an ongoing photographic series that serves as a visual chronicle of the rapid gentrification unfolding within my Los Angeles neighborhood in 2023. This phenomenon of swift modernization has profound implications for low-income families and the broader community. The pace and extent of change can be disconcerting and appear inhumane.

In this body of work, my aim is to convey the simultaneous beauty and brutality of change. I’ve established a 1-mile radius around my home in Los Angeles, CA, within which I’ve documented the continuous development of residential properties throughout the first quarter of 2023.

My artistic vision for this project centers on the juxtaposition of the new overshadowing the old, as seen in these residential images. Through this work, I seek to evoke a sense of moral reflection and provoke questions about the consequences of urban transformation.

By emphasizing the coexistence of beauty and brutality in the context of gentrification, “90057” invites viewers to engage with the complexities of change and the moral dimensions of progress.
